YouTuber's 1,700 Home Tours Expose Single-Life Secrets

It appears the time when residing alone was simply about getting by has passed. With individuals in their 30s and 40s who are financially independent now forming the majority of solo households, residences have evolved into areas that completely showcase personal preferences and individuality.

Jung Sung-kwon, aged 36, manages the YouTube channels *Jachu-nam* (Living Alone Man), *Yubu-nam* (Married Man), and *Gonggan-nam* (Space Man). He is a veteran content creator with nine years of experience online, having toured more "people's houses" than most real estate professionals. Up until now, he has explored over 1,700 residences. According to Jung, his journey began when he uploaded clips about advice for those living independently, but an unintentional post featuring a friend's house gained significant traction. This led him to shift focus toward showcasing homes from individuals who invite him in. Starting as *Jachu-nam*—which initially featured properties occupied by singles—the platform later grew into *Yubu-nam*, highlighting homes owned by couples, and *Gongkan-nam*, dedicated to exploring business environments. These channels have amassed 1.3 million followers. Everyone involved comes from regular backgrounds; they submit applications explaining why they wish to be featured, with selection done at random.

Jung remarked, "It's a misconception to link the phrase 'single-person household' exclusively with young adults in their 20s who live alone. Most single-person households I've encountered belong to individuals in their 30s and 40s, and the count of middle-aged people in their 50s and 60s residing independently is rising." These observations align with data. As per the *2025 Statistics on Single-Person Households* from the Ministry of Data and Statistics, there were 8,045,000 such households in South Korea in 2024, representing 36.1% of total homes—an unprecedented figure. Of these, 29.7% belonged to those in their 30s and 40s, whereas 32.7% included individuals aged 50 and above. Jung further noted, "The home environment of a single-person household typically showcases the resident's personal preferences, yet in multi-person households, neutral elements tend to dominate. For instance, someone living alone might put a mahjong table in the living area, but families sharing the space would have to choose furnishings based on mutual agreement due to varying tastes."

Which indoor furnishings are typically observed nowadays? Jung stated, "The most common fixture today is the 'ceiling fan,' mounted on the ceiling of the living area. The reality that many individuals reside in uniform apartment units with sturdy frameworks has simplified the installation of elements like ceiling fans or bathroom ventilation systems." He pointed out that the standardization of housing layouts has ironically enhanced the ease of internal fittings and sped up shifts in design styles.

Other changes have been observed in the factors considered when selecting a place to live. Jung noted, "About five to six years ago, many individuals responded 'because there is a big supermarket nearby' when questioned about their choice of neighborhood. Today, an increasing number mention 'convenience for deliveries.' The growth of e-commerce has even influenced the standards used for deciding where to reside."

Technology progress has also changed the importance of different elements. He stated, "Previously, apartment dwellers close to the Han River frequently expressed dissatisfaction with the glare caused by sunlight reflecting off the water and the traffic sounds. But due to improvements in insulation and soundproofing within windows, these grievances have declined. Now, individuals can completely appreciate the Han River as a 'scenic view,' which has boosted its worth."

Jung will present a talk entitled *What Type of Living Spaces Do Modern Single- and Dual-Person Households Reside In?* at 11 a.m. on the sixth day—which marks the third day—of the furniture and lifestyle fair *Sofurn & Life Show*. The event will take place between the fourth and seventh days of next month at COEX Hall A in Seoul. To apply, visit the official website (www.sofurn.or.kr), but first you must complete an online registration and join the Sofurn KakaoTalk group chat.

Leadership Clash: PPF Council Members Divided Over Resignation

Woo Jae-jun, a senior member of the People Power Party's Supreme Council, expressed during the party's recent Supreme Council meeting on the 11th, "I hope every one of our leaders steps down." This statement was met with a public rebuttal from fellow Supreme Council member Cho Kwang-han, who criticized, "That's childish rhetoric," leading to an intense debate. Although Jeong Jeom-sig, the newly appointed floor leader, called for cohesion in his inaugural speech at the Supreme Council—"There's no time to focus on groups or splits; we must come together"—the ongoing turmoil within the party continued to be evident.

During the morning session at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Woo mentioned the outcomes of the local elections, suggesting, "I think our leaders should create opportunities for future generations." He also noted, "Many within the party back People Power Party head Jang Dong-hyeok," yet emphasized, "In that case, we ought to organize an additional nationwide conference. Allow them to compete once more through a new vote and undergo fresh assessment. This would enable those who feel discontented to acknowledge the result, allowing us to come together again."

After taking the microphone, Cho commented, "Making childish statements publicly indicates considerable political naivety." Woo responded, "Inexperienced?" and Cho reiterated, "We can talk about this privately later."

Leader of the People Power Party, Jang Dong-hyeok, spoke at the meeting afterward, saying, "The leadership chosen by members is consistently prepared to take the most effective actions for the party," yet he also mentioned, "Prior to asking the leadership to make decisions, the 110 legislators should first address the problem with insufficient ballots." This essentially rejected the call for resignation, pointing to the continuing emergency.

Kim Min-su, a member of the Supreme Council, made an indirect comment: "Some individuals do not participate in secret meetings yet focus more on their own groups. I hope the leadership acts in the interest of all members."

The new floor leader, Jeong, emphasized solidarity during his first address at the central committee meeting: "This is the moment to come together exclusively for the party, the country, and the citizens. There is no space for factionalism or splits. I will take the initiative toward a united and revitalized People Power Party."

National Assembly Faces Ballot Shortage Investigation Request

The National Assembly conducted a full meeting in the afternoon of the 11th to hear an update regarding the call for a legislative investigation into the voting material shortfall that occurred during the June 3 municipal elections.

Previously, on the 8th, all 161 legislators from the Democratic Party of Korea and all 110 members from the People Power Party independently filed inquiry proposals with National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik.

Under the National Assembly Audit and Investigation Act, when a parliamentary inquiry request is filed, the Speaker is required to immediately present it before the full assembly and form a committee to carry out the examination following discussions with every negotiating faction. The investigation commences once the committee presents and gains authorization for an investigative proposal detailing the range, procedures, timeframe, and additional specifics.

As such, the governing and opposition parties are anticipated to begin thorough discussions regarding the extent and procedures of the legislative inquiry from the afternoon of the same day.

Boost Home Resale Value by Investing in the Basics

The key element of interior design lies in fundamental structure. With the same budget, allocate more resources to essential components such as insulation, moisture protection, and windows rather than focusing on noticeable elements like wall coverings and flooring.

Nam Kyung-yup, aged 49, photo CEO of New Build, boasting 24 years of expertise in the interior design sector, made these remarks. Before establishing the interior renovation firm New Build in 2018, CEO Nam held positions at Samsung C&T and the residential department of Kolon Construction. Starting from last year, he has additionally managed the personalized interior service 'New Home,' connecting businesses directly with clients. He is well-known for his role as an authority offering interior design "hacks" via the YouTube channel 'New Build TV.'

CEO Nam stated, "Renovating an older home primarily depends on fundamental structural improvements." As an illustration, he mentioned that even if one invests 100 million South Korean won in decorating their residence elegantly, it would be pointless if the dwelling remains chilly during winters, sweltering in summers, and has insufficient water resistance in the bathroom. He further noted, "Numerous well-established apartment complexes utilize materials with subpar insulating properties. Without replacing them, regardless of how meticulously the internal renovations are carried out, residents will ultimately reside in a property with flaws."

Having a solid foundation in fundamental building practices can be beneficial when reselling the property in the future. CEO Nam stated, "Although people might have different opinions about home decor, everyone agrees on the importance of insulation, water resistance, and window quality." He added that although elements such as structural framework, architectural style, and material finishes could affect the selling price differently based on personal taste, essential construction aspects contribute significantly to enhancing the property’s worth.

When selecting an interior design firm, he recommended verifying if they hold an appropriate interior construction permit, ensuring the registered business address aligns with their true location, and confirming that the company’s name matches the one on the bank account used for paying construction deposits. He added, "Before beginning the project, you must thoroughly review whether the company can present a detailed work timeline and whether they offer regular updates on daily progress prior to signing the agreement."

He further recommended verifying whether the company is capable of issuing a defect guarantee bond prior to signing the agreement. This type of bond ensures that if issues arise following completion of the interior work and the company fails to carry out repairs, the insurance provider will cover the resulting losses. CEO Nam stated, "This serves as a protective step to avoid scenarios where the company denies post-sale support or disappears without notice."

Woman Forced to Jump From Burning Building After E-Bike Fires

  • VIDEO: Scene of a fierce fire consuming an apartment building following an overloaded electric bike battery catching fire

A female individual was compelled to leap out of a window of a structure engulfed in flames during the early part of Tuesday morning following an incident involving two electric bicycles catching fire.

The London Fire Service responded to a standalone home in Brondesbury Park, Kilburn, at 4:49 am following a fire suspected to have originated from a faulty lithium battery in an electric bike during charging.

A female had to leave the building by leaping from a ground-floor window because the primary exit was obstructed, resulting in possible fractured ribs.

She was hospitalized, with another three individuals leaving the scene prior to the arrival of emergency responders.

Six fire vehicles along with approximately 40 firefighters hailing from Willesden, West Hampstead, North Kensington, Park Royal, and Paddington arrived at the location. The crews managed to bring the blaze under control more than an hour later, at 5:52 am.

The London Fire Service has now cautioned owners of electric bicycles and e-scooters claiming that they have been present at a fire approximately once every two days, which involved an electric bike or scooter.

The officials stated: "The fire obstructed the residents' primary exit path, stopping them from leaving their apartment. Consequently, they had to leave the building via the bedroom windows."

This event underscores the importance of keeping your exit path unobstructed and explains why we advise against placing an electric bike or scooter along your way out, like in a corridor or near your entrance.

The severe effects resulting from an exit being obstructed by an electric scooter fire have been observed. Rather than this, store it in a room where you can close the door, control the blaze, and dial 999.

This event further emphasizes the significance of functional smoke detectors and temperature sensing systems.

Smoke detectors provide the first indication of a fire and we recommend that all individuals ensure they have one installed in each room where a fire might originate, with the exception of kitchens and bathrooms, which are better suited for heat detectors.

In London, we've been dealing with a fire approximately every two days, typically involving an electric bike or scooter.

Last year, there was an unprecedented total of 206 fires, which is why we encourage anyone who owns such a vehicle or is considering buying one to review our #ChargeSafe guidelines to ensure their safety and the well-being of others.

It is equally crucial not to overfill the battery and to disconnect the charger when the charging process is done. Do not leave electric bikes or scooters charging without supervision or while you are asleep.

It details the heartbreaking loss of a mother along with her two young children, ages four and eight, who perished in a home fire triggered by an altered electric bike in 2023.

A hearing conducted in March of this year was told about Gemma Germeney, aged 31, who perished in a fire along with her eight-year-old daughter, Lilly Peden, and her four-year-old son, Oliver Peden, at a residence located on Sackville Close in Cambridge .

Scott Peden, the father of the children, remained unconscious for four weeks following the fire that occurred on June 30, 2023.

The firefighting department stated that an electric bicycle being charged was the likely source of the blaze.

Mr. Peden participated in the virtual session on Tuesday, whereas Mrs. Germeney's parents and other relatives were present physically.

Miles Bennett, representing Mr. Peden, stated that an individual "performed alterations" to the lithium battery in the electric bike.

"Shortly after that temporary solution was implemented, there was a fierce fire at Mr. Peden's residence," he stated.

Last July, a disturbing video surfaced online depicting a fire engulfing a residential building in the western area. London following a high-voltage electric bicycle battery ignited.

People living in Hanwell left their homes at 6 pm on July 19, 2025, following reports of fire visible through their windows.

Videos captured the balcony of an apartment completely ruined by the flames, with thick columns of gray smoke rising into the air.

Neighbors stood outside to watch as the fire consumed the house, while some called out from their own balconies to those attempting to enter.

As the structure burned brightly, worried neighbors from an adjacent building urged people to "leave" and cautioned them that e-bike 'can explode anytime'.

London Fire Service: Essential Safety Advice

  • Avoid blocking your exit path with anything, including electric bikes and scooters. Keep them stored in an area separate from primary walkways. We recommend placing these items in a secure outdoor space whenever feasible, like a garage or storage shed.
  • Use the proper charger consistently; failure to do so can raise the chance of a fire hazard, and purchase an authentic one from a trusted vendor.
  • Avoid trying to alter or interfere with your battery. Always adhere to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
  • Transforming traditional bicycles into electric ones with do-it-yourself kits purchased online can present significant risks. These modifications increase the likelihood of fires occurring. It is advisable to have the conversion done by a qualified individual and ensure that the battery comes from a trustworthy supplier, avoiding used options.
  • Ensure your battery and charger comply with UK safety regulations. We are particularly concerned about batteries bought from online marketplaces or obtained through the internet, as these might not satisfy the necessary safety criteria. When purchasing any product, verify that it bears a UKCA or CE label, confirming compliance with UK and EU safety, health, or environmental standards. If shopping online, choose a seller based in the UK.
  • Be alert to indicators that the battery or charging device may not be functioning properly — such as when the battery becomes warm upon contact or has altered its form.
  • Allow the battery to cool prior to charging. It is common for batteries to become warm during operation, and it is recommended to let them cool down before trying to recharge them, as they may be more prone to malfunction when overheated. If you're charging batteries inside, kindly adhere to our guidelines for secure charging.
  • Disconnect your charger after it has completed charging. Adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines during the charging process, and we recommend against leaving it unsupervised or while individuals are sleeping.
  • Place alarms where charging occurs. Make sure smoke detectors are installed in places where electric bikes or scooters are charged and verify they work properly on a regular basis. You can swiftly and simply assess your home using our complimentary online home fire safety evaluation tool.

Republican Senator's MLB-Style Diving Catch Wins Charity Game MVP

On the 10th, during a congressional charity baseball match hosted at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., Republican Senator Eric Schmidt made an impressive diving catch that was compared to those seen in Major League Baseball (MLB), sparking widespread discussion. This event, which started in 1909 and boasts more than a century of tradition, represents a key bipartisan activity within Congress. Each year, members from both political parties come together to play, with proceeds from ticket sales and fundraising efforts directed toward nonprofit groups based in Washington, D.C. Around 32,000 spectators attended, helping raise a new high of $3.2 million (about 4.8 billion South Korean won).

A standout moment came when Schmidt made a remarkable dive for the ball while playing left field during the third-inning bottom half. Schmidt ran towards the ball and executed an exceptional defensive move similar to those seen in Major League Baseball, prompting applause from the crowd irrespective of their political affiliations. Despite sustaining a nasal injury, he was recognized as the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP). On X (previously known as Twitter), Schmidt stated, "I gave my all in the game." At 50 years old, Schmidt hails from Missouri and joined the U.S. Senate in 2023. Additionally, Korean-American Congressman Dave Min, a Democrat, took part in the match as a designated hitter and provided a crucial two-run hit at the right time.

The Republican Party has maintained their victory record at six after beating the Democratic Party with a score of 11-2. Legislators from both political groups have been actively engaging in training sessions since February, concentrating on preparation for the contest. Mark Teixeira, known for playing with the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, and various teams, achieved 409 home runs throughout his Major League Baseball career. He is now campaigning as a Republican nominee in Texas, which is considered a Red State, leaning towards conservatism. Given his high probability of election, it seems probable that should Teixeira join the House of Representatives along with the baseball squad, the Republican Party's influence will remain strong for some time.

"Nothing at All": Why Hongkongers Can't Afford Collective Apathy

A charity showing of Herman Yau's newest movie prompts thoughts about exclusion, fairness, and societal duty in Hong Kong

Invited by a close friend, I was honored this past Saturday to attend a charitable film event organized by SideBySide, an independent nonprofit community organization.

The movie selected for the occasion was We're Nothing At All a newly launched emotional film directed by experienced filmmaker and writer Herman Yau Lai-to.

Although he is well-known for his commercially successful works, Yau does not hesitate to address social problems in his movies.

Cinema enthusiasts are likely to recall his earlier creations, including The Untold Story (1993), Ebola Syndrome (1996), From the Monarch to the Head of Government (2001) and Whisper and Moans (2007), each focusing on various popular societal issues of that era.

His newest movie begins with a heartbreaking bus explosion in the center of town on Valentine's Day, when a double-decked vehicle detonates, killing numerous passengers.

A former forensic specialist, Lung (portrayed by Patrick Tam Yiu-man), is called upon to head a police inquiry regarding a fatal explosion. With help from a younger officer named Raymond (acted by Wong You-nam), Lung's examination uncovers the personal histories of two young individuals, Fai (performed by Anson Kong Ip-sang, a member of the boy group Mirror) and Ike (played by singer Ansonbean), each dealing with their own challenges in life.

Keeping the essence of the original message intact but using different wording: This compelling film delves into complex issues like familial disapproval, household violence, financial hardship, exclusion, societal bias, and unfair treatment through the captivating relationship between Fai and Ike, without revealing key plot points.

The movie concludes with its main musical number, God Blesses Us (By Candy Lo), prompting the audience to reflect deeply.

In the discussion following the screening, Yau mentioned that the film's title was deliberately designed to allow for multiple interpretations. He was accompanied by Tam and Ansonbean, who discussed with the viewers their understanding of the roles they portrayed and the lessons they learned from participating in this demanding project.

The conversation continued to examine ways to increase support for underrepresented groups. Justice Poon Siu-tung, chairperson of the executive committee at SidebySide, urged every part of society to minimize stereotyping and discrimination, and to demonstrate greater respect towards those surrounding them.

Individuals involved in our criminal justice system will recognize the efforts of SidebySide throughout the years.

Founded in 1957, SidebySide highlights the significance of providing empathy and assistance to individuals who are marginalized or rejected by society. It offers various recovery programs for those involved with the legal system, former offenders, or other at-risk, susceptible populations, with the objective of improving their quality of life and achieving successful return to the community.

Apart from recovery programs, its offerings now include aspects like societal integration, psychological well-being, skill enhancement, cultural diversity promotion, and awareness campaigns.

Regarding public education, a particular acknowledgment should be given to SidebySide's Mock Trial Justice Education Program.

By participating in simulated court trials, held consistently since 2007 with assistance from legal experts and backing from educational institutions, individuals—such as high school pupils—are assigned positions like prosecutors, defense attorneys, accused persons, and eyewitnesses.

This allows them to develop a deeper comprehension and respect for the rule of law, the idea of fairness, unlawful actions, and community obligations.

Returning to the movie, one striking scene shows these words painted on a wall inside their modestly equipped converted apartment where Fai and Ike reside: "When there is an avalanche, no snowflake is innocent."

This particular scene is believed to be influenced by a well-known saying from the Polish-Jewish poet Stanislaw Jerzy Lec: "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible."

A typical understanding of this phrase suggests that during a widespread crisis, each person blames others, believing their individual role was too small to have made a difference.

As the camera moves downward, the inscription on the wall states: "On this lovely day, we conclude our less-than-lovely existence."

There is no question that this remains just as relevant now. Numerous disasters might have been prevented if all individuals had accepted their responsibilities and put in more effort. A key lesson I've drawn from We're Nothing At All Is it possible that if each person takes greater efforts to prevent widespread indifference, our society would certainly transform into a more pleasant place to reside?

Canada Targets Under-16 Social Media Use, Introduces AI Regulations

The suggested approach might result in businesses being charged as much as 3 percent of their total worldwide income or $7.2 million if they fail to adhere.

The Canadian cultural minister announced on Wednesday new laws aimed at prohibiting individuals younger than 16 from accessing social media platforms and mandating artificial intelligence-based conversation systems to restrict creation of damaging material.

The newly introduced Digital Safety Act positions Canada as the most recent nation joining a global trend of implementing stricter regulations against social media companies due to worries about their impact on young people.

"we have witnessed the severe impacts that online dangers can cause... ensuring children's safety must not be overlooked," stated Culture Minister Marc Miller in a declaration introducing the plan.

The law would prohibit social media accounts for individuals below the age of 16, according to the statement, which also mentioned that there could be an exception "route" for businesses if they prove "adequate protections" for young people.

Online social media platforms, such as those offering explicit material, would be required by the legislation to "reduce dangers linked to exposure" to different types of damaging information and implement tags for artificially created content.

The final rules will be implemented by a Digital Safety Commission, which could impose penalties on non-compliant businesses amounting to 3 percent of their worldwide income or C$10 million (US$7.2 million).

"This law aims to create a more secure setting for young Canadians, enabling them to meet face-to-face, form relationships, concentrate on their studies, and develop practical abilities needed to succeed," stated Health Minister Marjorie Michel in a press release.

Professor Sachin Maharaj from the University of Ottawa described the plan as "a move in the correct direction," highlighting "an acknowledgment that social media relates to behavioral and societal challenges."

Clearly, children will discover ways to bypass" limitations, he stated. "However, the true difficulty lies in altering how the applications function.

Besides the social media restriction, the new legislation would also oversee ever-present AI chatbots by mandating businesses to "reduce the likelihood of the chatbot sharing damaging information."

Firms would also be required to maintain openness regarding "reporting limits during emergencies," for instance, when a user plans to cause self-harm or endanger someone else.

The matter has been especially delicate in Canada after a tragic incident in April resulted in nine fatalities in the remote mining community of Tumbler Ridge, with the perpetrator among the victims.

OpenAI encountered significant backlash following its decision to block a shooter from its service in June of last year due to concerning discussions on ChatGPT. However, the company chose not to inform Canadian authorities as it found no indication of an immediate threat.

In December, Australia made history as the first nation globally to mandate that platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and others delete user accounts belonging to individuals under 16 years old, with significant penalties for non-compliance.

Indonesia started implementing its own restriction on social media usage for individuals below 16 years old in March, as some European countries have expressed interest in taking comparable actions.

Sam Altman Meets Samsung and Kakao in Seoul Visit

Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, is set to arrive in South Korea on Sunday, the 14th, for a brief stay spanning one night and two days. This will be his first visit in eight months, following his previous trip in October. After Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, recently made a stop in the country where he engaged in discussions about physical AI with several firms, Sam Altman's upcoming visit has sparked assessments that South Korea's impact within the worldwide technology sector continues to increase.

Throughout his brief trip, Sam Altman is set to present an internal talk at Samsung Electronics and hold discussions with Kakao about broadening their AI partnership. Altman is expected to leave on the evening of the 15th.

As per the technology sector, Samsung Electronics is completely implementing three artificial intelligence platforms — ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude — throughout its business activities, with the broadest implementation of ChatGPT Enterprise. This prompted Sam Altman to visit Samsung Electronics directly for a presentation. An insider in the tech field mentioned, "Of the three AI tools utilized by Samsung’s DX (finished product) department, ChatGPT sees the greatest use. All worldwide staff within the DX unit utilize ChatGPT, approximately 50% employ Gemini, and Claude is accessed solely via APIs."

Sam Altman will subsequently meet with Kakao's leadership team, such as Representative Chung Shin-a, to explore enhancing AI cooperation. In February of last year, OpenAI and Kakao established a strategic alliance centered around incorporating ChatGPT into Kakao's primary services. At this gathering, both parties anticipate concentrating on improving the connection between KakaoTalk's conversation environment and ChatGPT.

Altman is also expected to engage with local businesses utilizing ChatGPT Enterprise and discuss matters with companies involved in AI infrastructure. Nevertheless, he is not likely to meet with Lee Jae-yong, chairman of Samsung Electronics, or Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group. Lee is presently traveling for business purposes in Europe, and his schedule does not coincide with that of Chairman Chey.

Veteran Power Boosts High-Flying Japan's Soccer Ambitions

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Following surprising victories over Brazil in October and England in March during friendly matches, expectations for Japan have risen to an unprecedented height before their previous seven World Cup tournaments.

However, their veteran players showed no intention of relaxing at their base camp in Nashville on Wednesday as they practiced diligently before Japan's opening match in Group F on Sunday against the Netherlands, another established strong team.

I completely grasp that friendly matches and the opening game of the World Cup are entirely different things," stated 34-year-old defender Shogo Taniguchi. "We will work collectively and keep making adjustments right up until the final moment when studying our rivals.

Japan securing their fifth consecutive World Cup team, 39-year-old Yuto Nagatomo referenced the painful experience of being eliminated during the group stage at the 2014 event in Brazil under coach Alberto Zaccheroni.

"For those four years, everything went well, defeating Argentina, France, and Belgium in the process, but ultimately realizing that what we believed was confidence was actually excessive self-assurance," he stated.

Prior to the competitions held in South Africa (in 2010), Russia (in 2018), and Qatar (in 2022), we faced challenges, and it's typical for people to come closer together during tough times. I believe we require that unity right now.

The Japanese squad managed by Hajime Moriyasu has openly expressed their ambition to go all the way, and 25-year-old full-back Yukinari Sugawara, who is poised for his World Cup appearance, feels the team's distinctive structure will benefit them greatly.

Besides Maya Yoshida and Takumi Minamino, the two veteran players still with the team even though they are not listed to participate in the competition, former Japanese legends such as Makoto Hasebe and Shunsuke Nakamura are present to offer useful guidance as part of the coaching group.

"I believe this is the largest sports competition on Earth... From now on, teams making their tournament debut may experience something unusual as match days draw near. It will be crucial for us to get into top condition, utilizing every available resource, including our experienced veteran players," Sugawara stated.

EV Charging Discount Drives 9.2% Usage Surge

The reduction in public charging costs for electric vehicles (EVs) during daylight times on weekends and holidays last spring led to a 9% rise in charging instances relative to before the discount was introduced. The initiative sought to promote EV charging during spring afternoons, when solar energy production is significant, thereby making use of excess power. Having demonstrated success, the government intends to implement the identical strategy again this fall.

On the 11th, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment revealed details about the "Spring and Autumn Weekend/Public Holiday Free EV Charging" initiative. This promotional offer lasted for 17 weekends and public holidays starting from April 18 through May 31, with discounts available between 11 AM and 2 PM. Within this timeframe, electric vehicle owners who utilized charging stations managed by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment along with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) were eligible for reductions ranging from 40.1 to 48.6 South Korean Won per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

As per the ministry, about 13,000 public charging stations managed a cumulative total of 79,114 charge events throughout the promotional phase. The overall discount value amounted to 75.46 million South Korean won. On an average day during this time, there were 4,654 charging instances, representing a rise of 9.2% compared to the previous daily mean of 4,261 sessions.

The discount was launched alongside the seasonal and time-dependent electricity pricing changes that began in April. It formed part of a trial aimed at increasing energy usage during spring weekend afternoons, when solar production is significant yet demand remains low, resulting in regular excess supplies. Taking into account these findings, the government intends to bring back the reduced fees for public electric vehicle charging stations between September and October, as surplus solar power is anticipated once again.

Anti-Flood Clean Begins: Zoomlion, NADMO, FeDEMS, DML Launch 3-Day Operation in Accra

In an effort to minimize flooding and enhance environmental hygiene throughout the current rainy period, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has partnered with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), FeDEMS Group Ltd., Dredge Masters Ghana Limited, staff from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and Metropolitan Municipal District Assemblies (MMDAs) to launch a three-day cleaning and sediment removal operation in identified areas vulnerable to floods across the Greater Accra Region.

The activity started on Wednesday, June 10–12 at 7:00 a.m., focusing on key drainage systems and water routes in Roman Ridge, Mallam, Paloma, Circle, Kaneshie, and GBC regions, with crews carrying out thorough cleansing and sediment removal tasks to ensure proper rainfall runoff and minimize flood hazards.

The move follows recent intense rainfall that has caused floods in certain areas of the city, prompting worries regarding the effects of improper trash management and blocked sewerage networks on community well-being.

During discussions at the event, the Greater Accra Regional Head of NADMO, Mr. Dennis Nartey, highlighted that the partnership among NADMO, Zoomlion, FeDEMS, Dredge Masters, Police, Fire Service, and MMDAs reflects a shared dedication to tackling one of the main reasons for flooding in the city.

As he explained, each major rainstorm generates substantial quantities of trash and rubble, most of which ultimately ends up in drainage systems and rivers. He pointed out that the problem worsens due to people who intentionally throw garbage into the drains, hindering proper water movement during rainy periods.

Mr. Nartey emphasized that numerous issues related to flooding stem from human actions and thus necessitate a shift in public mindset.

He encouraged locals to handle garbage properly and utilize official waste disposal methods rather than depending on rainfall to remove trash.

He took advantage of the opportunity to support the continuous "No Do No Do" initiative, aimed at preventing careless waste disposal and promoting ecological accountability within the community.

He highlighted that safeguarding people and belongings from flooding necessitated the involvement of all individuals within the community.

The head of government and corporate affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs. Emma Adwoa Appiah Osei-Duah, stated that the firm was happy to collaborate with NADMO, FeDEMS, and other organizations during this initiative, especially as the nation faces regular intense rainfall.

She stated that debris transported by floodwater frequently gathers in drainage systems and rivers, leading to obstructions that raise the risk of floods.

She mentioned that the cleanup initiative was included in wider initiatives aimed at addressing these issues via ongoing hygiene programs and cooperation among interested parties.

Mrs. Appiah Osei-Duah mentioned that the three-day event aimed to assist with flood control measures by removing trash and sediment from key drainage systems in impacted areas. She also stated that the collaboration demonstrates a joint dedication to safeguarding neighborhoods and enhancing ecological surroundings within the capital city.

Additionally addressing the event, Ms. Sophia Kudjordji, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, mentioned that the program was designed to minimize flooding occurrences throughout the wet season by keeping drains and eaves clear of blockages.

"Today, we have come together for this cleanup activity as part of initiatives aimed at preventing flooding during intense rainfalls. Many floods happen due to blocked gutters and drainage systems filled with trash. Hence, we are removing debris from these areas to allow proper water movement," she said.

Miss Kudjordji pointed out that although rain cannot be stopped, the damage typically linked to flooding can be reduced using effective hygiene measures and consistent upkeep of drainage systems. She mentioned that by cleaning sewers and eliminating built-up trash, neighborhoods will have greater protection during periods of intense precipitation.

As a result, she urged citizens to back the work of waste management officials by avoiding the disposal of garbage into sewers and water bodies, emphasizing that keeping an area tidy is everyone’s duty.

She was confident that ongoing public awareness efforts and active community involvement could significantly help minimize flood risks and protect people and assets throughout the city.

Bank Stocks Outshine Securities in Rising Rate Environment

With renewed worries about worldwide increases in interest rates, banking shares—which were previously ignored—are now attracting focus as safe-haven investments. Although market declines driven by semiconductors and higher long-term interest rates have hurt stock markets, bank stocks remain more stable under assumptions of potential gains from elevated interest rates.

◇Different performance of banking and stock market shares in June

As reported by the Korea Exchange, the KRX Bank Index increased by 3.18% this month, standing in stark contrast to the KOSPI's drop of 8.79%. Out of the 27 sector indexes monitored by KRX, just five—namely banking, consumer discretionary, insurance, financial services, and broadcast and communication sectors—gained value this month. This underscores the more resilient defense offered by bank stocks amid the market downturn.

Although the KOSPI declined by more than 4% and major semiconductor companies lost over 5% on the 10th, banking sector shares remained fairly stable. KB Financial Group decreased only 0.52%, while Hana Financial Group slipped 0.92%. Kbank and Jeju Bank rose by 4.3% and 14.6%, respectively.

On the contrary, the KRX Securities Index decreased by 8.6% during this month. Experts believe this is due to reduced growth in trade volumes as part of the KOSPI adjustment, along with investors cashing in their gains. Specifically, the average daily trading volume on the KOSPI dropped by around 200,000 shares, and the total transaction value fell by 3 trillion South Korean won from the previous month.

◇Rising interest rates: Benefit for banks, challenge for bonds

Market participants credit the differing performances of banking and securities sector stocks to current pressure from interest rates. Higher rates usually enhance expectations for banks' net interest margins (NIM), whereas securities companies encounter worries about potential losses in bond valuations and declining investor confidence.

Global monetary policy conditions continue to be beneficial for banking institutions. Ongoing worries about rising prices have led to renewed hopes for further increases in interest rates, mainly in the United States. On the 10th, the U.S. May Consumer Price Index (CPI) was reported to have increased by 4.2% compared to the previous year—its highest level in three years. This data reinforced beliefs that the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings scheduled from the 16th to the 17th would keep interest rates unchanged instead of reducing them. David Kelly, head of global strategy at JP Morgan Asset Management, commented, "The Fed will still feel uneasy about inflation but probably won’t alter its approach. It’s highly likely that the FOMC will agree to maintain current rates during their upcoming session."

Ko Yeon-su, a researcher from Hana Securities, stated, "Due to expectations of two key rate increases during the latter part of the year, increasing interest rates have put pressure on stock markets." Heo Jae-hwan, leader of the global macro team at Eugene Investment & Securities, remarked, "During times when interest rates rise sharply, insurance companies perform better than banks, which in turn do better than securities firms."

◇Investment banks draw attention despite market fluctuations

Experts anticipate that the protective nature of banking sector shares will remain strong. In combination with ongoing high-interest rates, reduced anticipation of penalties associated with Hong Kong H-index equity-linked notes (ELS), and growing investor interest in consistent dividend returns amidst increased market instability are bolstering bank stocks. Their reliable income streams and dividends render them appealing choices during periods of financial uncertainty or when interest rates rise.

Na Min-wook, a researcher from DB Securities, stated, "Bank shares offer security amid uncertain times. We continue to favor bank stocks due to their solid defensive qualities, considering ongoing global challenges such as the U.S.-Iran conflict."

Nevertheless, the increasing value of the U.S. dollar presents a potential threat. The won has surpassed the 1,560 South Korean won level relative to the dollar for the first time in 17 years, prompting worries regarding financial institutions' capital sufficiency. Sustained elevated exchange rates might marginally lower main banks' Common Equity Tier 1 ratios, an essential indicator of fundamental capital.

Couple Defies Court Order to Reopen Footpath Through £2M Home Garden

A pair whose fences were removed from their property by local authority employees following a six-year court dispute regarding a riding path might now be subject to legal proceedings due to allegations that they have obstructed the pathway once more.

On Monday, workers came to dismantle the three obstacles and thick thorny bushes that had grown along the path which angry locals claimed had been used for over 100 years.

A High Court decision supported the local council and the Planning Inspectorate following their confirmation that the route located next to David and Dawn Moore's home in Little Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, constitutes a public footpath.

Residents applauded when the gates were removed — though the process was briefly stopped two times to allow an ambulance to respond as Mrs. Moore reportedly became unwell amid the commotion.

At a certain moment, Mr. Moore approached spectators who were recording the event, one of whom said to him: 'I'm applauding because the bridle path is now accessible.'

He responded, "Ah. Open at the cost of my wife fainting, right? Are you satisfied with that?"

But jubilation has turned to renewed frustration after villagers complained at least one of the gates had been rehung and the Moores – who are believed to have spent up to £400,000 on their failed legal case - were warning anyone attempting to utilize the footpath making an effort to use the bridleway seeking to access the bridleway trying to make use of the walking trail endeavoring to follow the bridleway struggling to navigate the bridleway looking to travel along the bridleway trying to take the bridleway route attempts to use the designated path efforts to proceed via the bridleway that they were ‘trespassing’.

Other allegations suggested that the pair stopped municipal employees from installing a fresh equestrian path sign on publicly owned property located just across from their residence the next day, following an argument with them.

A person said to the Mail: "I had just gone through, and Mr. Moore informed me that I was trespassing. As I kept walking, he shut the gate behind me."

I've informed the committee and provided them with images.

One person stated: "Dawn Moore was the first to confront [the individual attempting to use the bridleway] and inform him that he was taking the incorrect route."

Then David went out and declared that he was entering without permission—so both of them were doing the same.

Other remarks included: "Mr. Moore and his wife were both outside urging the individuals attempting to install the directional sign, who eventually stopped after hearing an emotional tale."

They continuously replace a hazardous and unstable gate, while instructing individuals to leave the property because they are considered trespassers.

They had previously received warnings from the committee, suggesting they may face legal action.

'Strange that she [Mrs Moore] had a miraculous recovery just to challenge those using the footpath.'

The entrance points were taken down following Mr. Moore and his spouse, a medical professional recognized as Dr. Dawn Carnell, disregarding an official directive issued by Hertfordshire County Council.

Violating an enforcement order issued by a local authority constitutes a criminal offense that may result in prosecution before a magistrate’s court, with the possibility of imposing unbounded penalties.

Alternatively, the committee might tear down or eliminate unauthorized elements and seek reimbursement from the property owner.

Court orders may also be issued by the local court or Supreme Court to stop ongoing or serious unauthorized actions.

The ongoing conflict centers around the six-bedroom Breach House, some sections of which can be traced to the 17th century. The Moores purchased it for £1.2 million in 2015 and later invested heavily in restoring the neglected home.

In 2019, residents found that the public path crossing the 1.75-acre area had been blocked by signs and secured gates—according to the Moores, the equestrian trail actually passed between two adjacent cottages.

Hertfordshire County Council got involved and issued an order confirming that the bridleway ran across the couple's property, prompting the Moores to appeal their case to the Planning Inspectorate.

Over the course of a four-day hearing, senior final mapping official Gavin Harbour-Cooper stated that the council examined the issue back in 1956 and determined that the path passed through Breach House.

However, when the initial "Definitive Map" was created three years later, it depicted the "incorrect path" between the houses, even though the Definitive Statement provided the accurate details.

Nigel Adams, the creator of the online real estate platform BigBlackHen.com, who had family members that possessed Breach House between 1973 and 1985, mentioned that he was responsible for selling the house to Mr. Moore and his spouse in 2015.

He stated: 'Throughout this process, I regularly talked with the Moores about the current bridleway and its path across the Breach House property.'

William Marques, who resided in the home during the 1960s, also remembered the path running through it.

He explained how he utilized it to reach his grandparents' house since the alternative path, via road, was 'too risky'.

However, Mr. Moore, who operates an oncology company alongside his wife, informed the investigation that the council acknowledged in 2020 that the bridleway signs near his residence were incorrect, leading to their removal.

He stated: "When I bought the house, I wasn't informed about the presence of a bridlepath running through the land."

After the planning inspector rejected the Moores' case, they took their appeal to the High Court, where the judge also supported the locals and highlighted the 'fundamental unlikelihood of the Claimants' stance'.

They were denied permission to appeal to the Court of Appeal last year, but in an interview last month, Mr. Moore mentioned he is considering taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights.

He explained that he would be "arguing under Article 8 of the Human Rights Convention and also Article 1, Schedule 1 of the ECHR," adding: "All of this centers on the choice to alter my specified 2015 purchasing criterion, which is now established in the High Court."

You have the right to what you bought following full investigation.

Speaking about the six-digit amount he and his spouse invested in their failed court case, Mr. Moore mentioned to the Mail early this year: 'The expense isn't really a factor anymore. It's about whether you believe you're correct or not.'

He mentioned that his wife has fully backed him in the current legal dispute, as both of them feel the council is responsible for supplying incorrect paperwork when they purchased their house.

“This isn’t about me embarking on an adventure into the wilds, donning my helmet, and declaring ‘Whatever occurs, occurs,’” he stated.

This reflects two rational individuals examining the situation from 2015 and being certain of their correctness.

The hostile atmosphere created by the conflict within the neighborhood led Mr Moore — whose spouse is employed at University College Hospital in London — to report incidents such as vehicle vandalism, like scratches on his car, along with acts of intimidation.

In the meantime, the residents of the two adjacent bungalows—among them Wayne Morris, head of the local parish council—invested many thousands of pounds in their personal legal expenses.

Mr. Morris has stated that "a significant amount of time and resources have been squandered" on this matter.

A representative from Hertfordshire County Council stated, “We have learned about this issue through nearby residents and are currently evaluating the possibilities at our disposal.”

The Moores were asked for their response.

A Lucky Aussie Thought He Won $1,600—Then His Son Spotted the Mistake

  • An Australian believed he had won $1,600
  • The reward amounted to $1.6 million.

A Australian dad experienced an unexpected surprise when he first thought he had won $1,600, only to later find out it was actually $1.6 million.

The Melbourne A man was among the four Division One winners in the TattsLotto draw held on Saturday.

He remembered the instant when he understood his reward was significantly larger than $1,600.

"IT STILL HASN'T SETTLED IN!" he chuckled. "It's still not clicking!" he grinned. "It's still not hitting me!" he laughed. "It's still not registering!" he said with a smile. "It's still not making sense!" he joked.

It was Saturday evening, and I was spending time with my grown children when I looked at my TattsLotto ticket.

"I looked at them and exclaimed, 'I've earned $1,600! Yay!'”

Then my son looked at the ticket and exclaimed, 'No Dad, you've won $1.6 million! You've hit the top prize!' I kept repeating, 'No! I've only won $1,600!'

The fortunate recipient stated he was in 'disbelief'.

"I have often envisioned how I would respond to winning the big award, but when it finally occurred, I simply felt stunned," he stated.

I have been using the same lottery numbers for two and a half years. I'm not sure why I picked them, but I have continued with them from the start.

I didn't think I'd ever get to see the interior of the Lott Building!

Many thanks. This is a wonderful award.

The successful lottery ticket was bought at Moomba Park Authorized News Agency in Fawkner.

Owner Kevin Liu mentioned it was his eighth time selling a winning ticket for the first-tier draw.

"This year marks our tenth anniversary of overseeing the company since 2016, and this is our eighth Division One-winning submission sold within the past decade," he stated.

We are extremely happy to have sold yet another Division One champion and our clients have also shown their enthusiasm over the last week.

We have adorned the shop with numerous balloons and banners to mark this remarkable achievement.

We hope the champion from our department has tremendous success in the days ahead!

Out of the four recipients, two are situated in Victoria, with one each in Queensland and South Australia.

Tuvalu PM: Climate-Stricken Islands Deserve Compensation from Polluters

TOKYO - Prime Minister Feleti Teo from Tuvalu, a small island country in the Pacific threatened by rising seas caused by climate change, stated during an exclusive conversation with the Mainichi Shimbun on June 5 that the ICJ's advisory ruling in July 2025 confirming each country’s duty to tackle climate change was “a significant accomplishment.”

He emphasized that island nations, which emit very little greenhouse gases but face severe impacts from climate change, "must receive compensation for the losses we have incurred."

Teo went to Japan to participate in the Island Nations Ocean Conference taking place in Tokyo from June 3rd to 4th.

The ICJ view describes climate change as an "urgent global issue threatening every form of life," suggesting that countries not taking steps might face legal consequences. The UN General Assembly, which includes 193 members, also passed a resolution in May 2026 backing this perspective with significant approval.

Teo stated, "The discussion seems to have moved from ethical responsibilities to a legal obligation." He contended that nations which contribute to global warming should offer assistance or "face consequences for their role in triggering climate change."

Even though the ICJ advisory opinion and the UN resolution do not have legal force, Teo stated that they may "serve as the foundation for a future agreement" aimed at creating enforceable global actions.

Concerning the U.S. government under President Donald Trump's choice to exit the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, Teo stated, "This represents a significant step backward." He mentioned that "nations such as Tuvalu have consistently turned to the U.S. for guidance," and further noted, "I trust that leading nations like Japan and various European countries can persuade the U.S. to... reconsider their present approaches toward climate change."

Describing the adoption of renewable energy as "a major priority," Teo stated, "We hope that Japan will assist us in achieving greater energy security."

The government of Tuvalu has been elevating coastal areas and implementing additional measures to address climate change, alongside developing strategies to transfer the country’s administrative operations, cultural aspects, and national identity into an online virtual environment called the metaverse. Teo referred to this approach as “preparing for the worst possible situation,” noting that one aim is to maintain Tuvalu's independence as a digital state should its actual landmass be lost.
